Owning your content

The usual places to create a simple website or blog are Wix, Squarespace, Tumblr, Wordpress, Webflow and many more. Most of these are targeted towards people who have no interest in learning web development. People who are first and foremost content creators. I think these services are great and have opened up possibilities tremendously.

But there is a big downside with most of the hosted services: you don’t own your content or at least you can’t migrate easily.

This site is created with a static site generator called Hugo and I can only recommend it to anyone who wants to build a blog for the long run. It’s not even that the particular system matters that much (there are hudreds of static site generators one could use). It’s more that I have all my content as markdown files and can take them whereever I want to.
